Sha’ul said, “Imitate me, just as I also imitate Messiah.”( 1 Corinthians 11: 1) YaHUShA, of course, is our ultimate example who LIVED and TAUGHT according to the Torah! Many backsliding children of YaHUaH hold fast to pagan practices such as the popular “What Would Jesus Do” jewellery instead of searching the Scriptures to find out. If we are going to imitate Messiah, then perhaps we should consider wearing tzitzits instead of “what would Jesus do” jewellery as tzitzits is what Messiah wore. This commandment is found in Bamidbar (Numbers) 15: 37-39, and also in Debarim (Deuteronomy) 22:12 – a commandment of YaHUaH “for ALL generations”. The purpose of the tzitzits is to remind us of the Torah to DO them and to remind us always not to go after our own hearts and our own eyes after which we GONE ASTRAY. I have heard so many people say, “My Father knows my heart, He knows what I believe” to justify their means, yet not knowing the Father had said, “The HEART IS DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL…” (Yirmeyahu 17:9) Not only is it to remind us NOT TO follow after our own hearts BUT ALSO to remind us to be “SET-APART UNTO YaHUaH”. Wouldn’t you like to be set apart unto YaHUaH? We are also commanded to put a blue cord in the tzitzits and this reminds us of the event where Mosheh and Aharon, Nadab, and Abihu and seventy of the elders of YShREL saw ELaHYM “and under His feet like a paved work of SAPPHIRE STONE” – a beautiful blue! (see Shemoth [Exodus] 24: 9-10) as if to remind us that we are always in His presence!

The purpose of the tzitzits is manifold and will clearly become evident in this study. The “garment” is a rectangular-shaped piece of linen OR wool (see Leviticus 19:19 & Deuteronomy 22:9-11) with “tassels” called Tzitzits on each of the four corners. “Tallit” simply means gown or cloak reflecting the fact that it was originally worn throughout the day. I for one, favor a garment of pure white, based on the verse, “let your garment always be white” (Ecclesiastes 9:8 & Rev 3:4) with its tzitzits (threads or fringes) attached to each corner having a blue cord as commanded! Although I am not wearing a white garment every day, except on those special occasions, I still wish to attached four tzitzits on my clothing and therefore so many people often mistakenly see me for a Jew. A vast ignorance that persist in the minds of those who regard the Jews (the tribe of YaHUDaH) to be “all” YShRaEL. They’ve not been taught that the “Jews” are only ONE of the twelve tribes of YShRaEL. The Commandment was given to “all” YShRaEL (men and woman): “ONE ORDINANCE shall be both for you of the congregation AND ALSO FOR THE STRANGER THAT SOJOURNS WITH YOU, an ordinance FOREVER in your generationS: as you are so shall the stranger be before YaHUaH. ONE LAW and ONE MANNER shall be for you and the stranger that sojourns with you.”Bemidbar (Numbers) 15: 15,16

Take Ruth for example: a Moabite woman from a foreign country, “grafted into YShREL” by marrying Boaz who had this to say;

“May YaHUaH ELaHYM repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by YaHUaH the ELaHYM of YShREL, UNDER WHOSE WINGS (“kanaph” which is the hem of the garment on which the tzitzits are tied) YOU HAVE COME TO TAKE REFUGE.” Ruth 2:12

Ruth (like all of us who are “grafted in”) came under / clothed herself with the “talith” which contains two Hebrew words; “TAL” meaning “tent/tabernacle” and “ITH” meaning “little” thus she clothed herself (as we do also) with little tents or tabernacles with “tassels” called Tzitzits on each of the four corners to show that we are standing under the Kingdom of YShREL with “ONE ORDINANCE” following and obeying His commandments.

The Tzitzits of a “tent or tabernacle” are there for a specific reason – no tent are made without them; thus the Tzitzits of our clothes symbolizing the very fact that we won’t be swept away through all kinds of “winds” of doctrines (man-made traditions), but will “remember all the commands of YaHUaH” the very purpose for the tzitzits in the first place!

Furthermore, there is a great lesson to be learned from reading the conversation between the Prophet SamuEL and King Shaul, so that we do not walk in like manner as King Shaul. Carefully notice what the Prophet SamuEL said unto King Shaul; “I will not return with you: for you have rejected THE WORD OF YaHUaH, and YaHUaH have rejected you from being king over YShRaEL. And as SamuEL turned about to go away, Shaul laid hold upon the skirt (“kanaph” which is the hem of the garment on which the tzitzits are tied) of his mantle (tallit), and it rent.” Now carefully notice: “And SamuEL said unto him, YaHUaH has torn the [what?] KINGDOM of YshREL from thee this day, and has given it to a neighbour of yours, better than you.” 1 SamuEL 15:26-28

e.g King Shaul came out from underneath YaHUaH’s WINGS (“kanaph”) where he could have found refuge, instead, he turned aside from the very instructions and perhaps not wearing His garment with “tassels” called Tzitzits on each of the four corners that day – openly showing the Prophet SamuEL that he has rejected the Word of YaHUaH and not living according to the instruction thus the very words of SamuEL and THERFORE Shaul with a last desperate attempt laid hold upon the skirt (“kanaph” which is the hem of the garment on which the tzitzits are tied). Many chapters later; “And he (Shaul) came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Shaul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave. And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which YaHUaH said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it shall seem good to you. Then David arose, and gently cut off the skirt (“kanaph” which is the hem of the garment on which the tzitzits are tied) of Shaul’s robe (tallit).”1 SamuEL 24:3-4

In this way David showed Shaul that he could very well have killed him if he did so desired. But the question remains; why did David rather choose to lay hold of the Tzitzits of King Shaul? Because the Tzitzits symbolizing the Kingdom! In this way David showed Shaul that he has “torn the Kingdom of YShREL from thee this day” therefore the very words of Shaul: “And now look, I know that you shall certainly reign and that the Kingdom of YShREL shall be established in your hand.”

The idea is not to wear “tsitzits” on each of the four corners “to be seen by men” (Mattiyahu 23:5 ) but through this gesture they may certainly perceive you to be “set-apart unto YaHUaH”.

Then the very famous account, the story of the woman with an issue of blood. She reached out to touch the “hem” of YaHUShA’s garment (Mattithyahu 9: 20-22 & Marqos 5: 25-34). The word translated “hem” is actually referring to the fringes called tzitzits in Hebrew. A desperate woman who had spent all her money on cures that did not work, but after rumours been spread about the Messiah who came in the Name of His Father (Yochanan 10: 25) she went out to reach with a last desperate attempt, grabbed hold of the testimony (e.g. she ate the loaves and were satisfied – see Yochanan 6: 26) of the prophet Mal’aki (Malachi) 4:2 which states, “But to you who FEAR MY NAME, the Son of Righteousness [refering to YaHUShA] shall arise with healing in His wings”. And because she feared that great Name YaHUaH, she therefore found healing in His tzitzits. The Hebrew word for “wings” used in this passage is “kanaf” which is the hem of the garment on which the tzitzits are tied. A word that specifically means “fringe”(tzitzits) like feathers or the edge of a birds wings, that is clearly seen on an eagle in flight.

Notice what Revelations have to say in regards to the Woman (YShREL), she “was given two WINGS OF A GREAT EAGLE, TO FLY into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time,…” and comparing these words with those of the prophet Zekaryah (Zechariah) 8: 23 that says, “Thus says YaHUaH of host, ‘In those days, ten men from all languages of the nations TAKE HOLD, yes they shall take hold of the edge of the garment [tzitzits] of a man, a Yahudi, saying, ‘Let us go with you,[ “into the wilderness” ] for we have heard that ELaHYM YaHUaH is with you.” We are to take hold of this commandment for “all generations”! And Tehillem (Psalms) 124: 1-8 confirms even further by saying, “Then the proud waters (the mighty army) Would have gone over our being (overwhelmed and destroyed us) Blessed be YaHUaH, Who DID NOT give us as prey to their teeth. Our being has ESCAPED LIKE A BIRD (flight) From the snare of the trappers; The snare was broken, and we have ESCAPED. Our help is IN THE NAME OF YAHUAH, Maker of the heavens and earth.”

Praise YaHUaH! So take hold!
